How to change your password on a Windows laptop
To change your password on a Windows laptop, follow these steps:
Open Settings:
- Click the Start button (Windows icon) in the bottom-left corner.
- Click the Settings icon (gear) or type "Settings" in the search bar and select it.
Go to Accounts:
- In the Settings window, click Accounts.
Select Sign-in Options:
- In the left sidebar, click Sign-in options.
Change Your Password:
- Under the Password section, click Change.
- If prompted, enter your current password.
- Enter your new password, confirm it, and provide a password hint (optional).
- Click Next and then Finish.
Alternative Method (Ctrl + Alt + Delete):
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard.
- Select Change a password.
- Enter your current password, then your new password, and confirm it.
- Press Enter or click the arrow to save.
For Microsoft Account Users:
- If you use a Microsoft account, you may be redirected to change your password online. Follow the prompts to sign in to your Microsoft account via a browser and update your password.
For Local Accounts:
- The above steps work directly for local accounts. If you don’t have a password set, you may need to create one first under Sign-in options.
Notes:
- Ensure your new password is strong (mix of letters, numbers, and symbols).
- If you use a PIN or other sign-in method, changing the password won’t affect those unless you modify them separately.
- If you’re on a work or school laptop, you may need admin permissions—contact your IT department if restricted.
